OPT and CPT: Finding the Right Employer as an F-1 Student
F-1 students on OPT and CPT have unique employer requirements. Here's how to find employers that actively hire international students.
OPT vs CPT: The Basics
OPT (Optional Practical Training): Post-graduation work authorization for F-1 students. 12 months standard; up to 24 additional months for STEM degree holders (STEM OPT extension).
CPT (Curricular Practical Training): Work authorization during your degree, directly tied to your curriculum. Can be part-time (up to 20 hours/week) or full-time.
Both allow you to work for US employers using your F-1 student status — no H-1B lottery required.
The STEM OPT Advantage
If you have a STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) from an accredited US institution, you can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after your initial 12-month OPT.
This gives you up to 36 months of work authorization after graduation — enough time for 3 H-1B lottery attempts.
STEM OPT requires your employer to be E-Verify enrolled. This is critical — not all employers participate in E-Verify, and without it, you cannot get the STEM OPT extension.
What to Look for in an OPT Employer
1. E-Verify enrollment
Required for STEM OPT. You can check E-Verify status at the DHS website, or look for the E-Verify badge on job postings.
2. H-1B sponsorship history
Your OPT work authorization is temporary. Ideally, your OPT employer will also sponsor you for H-1B. Check their H-1B filing history and approval rate before accepting.
3. Cap-exempt status
If your OPT runs out before H-1B lottery selection, a cap-exempt employer (university, nonprofit) can hire you on H-1B without lottery risk while you continue entering lotteries with a cap-subject employer.
4. PERM follow-through
If you're planning a long-term career with this employer, do they sponsor green cards? Getting your green card process started early matters enormously given India's EB backlog.
Finding OPT-Friendly Employers
The best OPT employers actively recruit international students and have established processes for OPT→H-1B transition. Look for:
- Large tech companies with dedicated international HR teams
- Cap-exempt employers (universities, nonprofits) for stability
- E-Verify certified employers for STEM OPT eligibility

CPT: What to Know
CPT is available during your degree, not after. Key rules:
- Must be an integral part of your curriculum
- Must be authorized by your DSO (Designated School Official)
- Full-time CPT for 12+ months makes you ineligible for OPT — a critical rule many students overlook
Choosing CPT employers wisely: If you're using CPT for internships, prioritize employers who actively hire full-time and sponsor H-1B. Your CPT employer is your best lead for a full-time offer and eventual H-1B sponsorship.
The OPT→H-1B Timeline
| Timeline | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Graduation | OPT begins (after DSO authorization) |
| October–December | Apply for H-1B lottery registration for following April |
| March | H-1B lottery registration window |
| Late March | Selection notification |
| April 1 – June 30 | Employer files H-1B petition if selected |
| October 1 | H-1B status begins |
| OPT end date | Must have H-1B approval or cap-exempt option |
